John Sheridan - 2001 Inductee, Phyllis Sheridan - 2012 Inductee
Congratulations to John Sheridan on becoming the first inductee to the Canadian Road Horse Hall of Fame. John was a founding member of this Association and exhibited many great horses over his showing career. Some of these included Page Boy, True Lee, Top Flight, and The Golden Riddel. Assisting John throughout the years was his wife, Phyllis, and, as John indicated at his induction ceremony at the 2002 Royal — “behind every great man is a great woman.”
Phyllis Sheridan began showing road horses and hackney horses with her husband John in 1951 until their retirement . Phyllis was an accomplished driver, a meticulous caretaker and John’s toughest critic. When they went to look at a road horse prospect in the Kingston area John decided against purchasing the horse. After dinner that same evening Phyllis turned to John and said I think you had better go back and buy that horse, that horse was Page Boy who went on to win the wagon stake at the Royal Winter Fair in 1975 and 1982. Phyllis is a very soft spoken woman who knows her horses. In 2009 they were very honored and pleased to be inducted into the American Road Horse and Pony Association Hall of Fame during the World’s Championship Horse Show in Louisville Kentucky. Phyllis is a wonderful cook and always came to the shows prepared with lots of extra goodies for any visitors that might come to their trailer or tack room.
The Sheridans retired from showing in 1996, but their latest honour came in September of 2009, when they were inducted in the American Road Horse and Pony Association Hall of Fame during a ceremony in Louisville, Kentucky.
